The Sunday Star-Ledger

Kay Kato’s cartoon column “On Location in Jersey with Kay Kato” appeared every Sunday in the Sunday Star-Ledger for over 31 years, from 1964 through 1995.   In her role as “sketching reporter” she produced more than 8500 drawings, never missing a deadline!  She covered the entire state, drawing the environment, historic places, transportation, education, businesses and occupations, ethnic groups, hobbyists, sporting events, cultural events, lifestyle and leisure activities, and much more.   Her fan mail started right away, complimenting her wit and humor as well as suggesting events for her to draw.   She drew everything from dog shows to political events, all the while capturing the essence of the people who attended with a bit of humor, occasionally even drawing herself in the cartoon.  Here are some copies:

Park Art: with PAD & PENCIL in the Parks for 31 Years

Park Art was a collection of cartoons  from Kay’s  columns for  The Star-Ledger, the largest paper in New Jersey.  The weekly column, “On Location in Jersey“, ran for 31 years .    Of the 8500 drawings Kay Kato did  for the column,  360 were collected into the book  to showcase the Essex County Parks System.   All the proceeds and royalties from the book were donated by Kay to the Park System.
